Perinatal stress from conception to 1 year of life
Reference: PSI2015-63494-PThis completed project has shown in various publications the effect of psychological stress on the process of pregnancy and childbirth as well as on the neurodevelopment of babies. The main results obtained show that the stress experienced by the pregnant woman is related to greater psychopathology throughout pregnancy, including a greater probability of developing postpartum depression. Furthermore, we have found that higher cortisol levels in the mother during pregnancy increase the probability of having an instrumental delivery or cesarean section and even delay lactogenesis. The mother's cortisol in pregnancy has also been linked to the baby's cortisol at birth as well as in subsequent neurodevelopment.
Childstress Project
The role of perinatal stress in the temperament, psychopathology and reactivity of the offspring. (Childstress).
Reference: PID2019-110115GB-I00Project granted by the Ministry of Science and Education R&D.This currently active project is part of a previous project called GESTASTRESS.This project starts from the idea that perinatal stress has been considered as one of the determining elements in the etiology of psychological disorders in the offspring, as well as problems in temperament, development and reactivity to stress. This project we set ourselves a new objective which is to verify the effect of the mother's perinatal stress in her offspring in the preschool period, (2 to 5 years). For this, we have 340 women who have been monitored for stress throughout their pregnancy, as well as their children up to one year of age. With this project aims to evaluate the aspects of temperament, psychopathology and development, asymmetries in dermatoglyphs, as well as reactivity to stress in preschool children. In this line, starting from the Fetal Programming Theory, we hypothesize that there is a certain time point in pregnancy where experiencing high levels of stress from the mother can make the fetus more vulnerable to the development of psychological and adaptive disorders in the future. The results derived from this project they can have a great impact, with regard to the prevention of the mental health of the pregnant woman as one of the influencing factors in the development, psychopathology and reactivity of her descendants.
Aborstress Project
The role of stress in repeat abortions
Reference: A-CTS-229-UGR18A high percentage of women who have suffered repeat abortions do not show a known cause that explains why these losses are occurring. In addition, there is also a high percentage of women who have experienced repeat abortions for different causes, such as lupus, antiphospholipid syndrome, malformations in the reproductive organs ... etc. Finally, even taking into account these causes, a percentage of them come to have their babies without difficulty while others continue to suffer repeated miscarriages. What is it that differentiates the two? Could it be psychological stress? The main objective of this research project is to evaluate the role of stress in women suffering from repeated abortions. We hypothesize that chronic stress mother, and its physiological correlate, increased cortisol, predicts different alterations in women who suffer repeated abortions, favoring the loss of pregnancy. The results found by this project will help us, not only to deepen our knowledge of the causes of repeated abortions, but also to obtain information for a better approach to the mental health of the pregnant woman and its implications in the proper development of her pregnancy.
